Later High School Start Times
In Clark County both Evergreen Public Schools and Camas Public Schools have changed their traditional school start times to later times for their high schools. Why did they do this?
There has been significant research into the issue of sleep cycles of teens as well as how a later start time for class impacts teens. From the CDC there is this article about later start times: https://www.cdc.gov/features/school-start-times/index.html
When Seattle Public Schools changed their start times by 55 mins they saw an increase in attendance, grades and amount of student sleep. Read about it here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/12/181212140741.htm
So the big question is why hasn’t Vancouver Public Schools changed to later start times for our high schools? With two districts in the area already switched we could look to them for leadership and troubleshooting. If Vancouver can elect board members in November that are aware of the issue perhaps we can see a change for the 2020 school year. I know I would be in favor of that.
